You'll hear a lot about Relenza (zanamivir), a new INHALED antiviral for influenza.
It's the first in a new class.. .neuramiriidase inhibitors.
Blocking this enzyme reduces viral shedding. . .preventing the spread of the virus to uninfected cells.
There's not a lot of enthusiasm for using Relenza for TREATMENT. It only shortens the duration of symptoms by about a day.
Relenza might turn out to be more useful for PREVENTION... especially in high-risk patients.
