Urine Color

   It's important to tell patients if they're taking a drug that can change urine color.. . 
to avoid unnecessary alarm.
  Some drugs frequently cause color changes.. .others show up
only in acidic or alkaline urine.
  Brown, black, or dark urine can be seen with cascara..
furazolidone.. . levodopa.. .methyldopa. . .metronidazole.
nitrofurantoin.. . or senna.
  Bright yellow urine is common with vitamin supplements that
contain riboflavin (vit B2).
  Blue or green urine can be caused by methylene blue (Urised)
amieriptyline.. . flutarnide. . .methocarbarnol.. . and triarnterene.
  Green urine can also be due to the phenol in some INJECTABLE
drugs. . .cirnetidine, prornethazine, and propofol.
  Red, pink, or orange urine can be seen with phenazopyridine
(Pyri di urn) . . .rifampiri. . .rifabutin.. .rifapentine,. .doxorubicin... sulfasalazine. . .
or phenothiazines.
  Be sure to tell patients on warfarin or heparin to alert you if they have red urine because it might indicate bleeding.
