Mastectomy

A Few Women Regret Prophylactic Mastectomy, Study Shows. A survey of high risk women who underwent bilateral prophylactic mastectornies to prevent breast cancer has indicated that more than 70 percent were satisfied with their decisions and would make the same decision again. The study was conducted on women who had a familial history of breast cancer and who had the surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota between 1960 and 1993; the results were presented May 16 at a conference held by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, The survey showed that although 74 percent of women studied said that the surgery lessened their anxiety about developing breast cancer, 25 percent also said that they felt less fern.4-tine and 36 percent were dissatisfied with the appearance of their bodies.
