Aortic valve sclerosis, a common heart valve condition that effects 25 percent of people aged 65 and older and has long been thought to be benign, has been found to be associated with a 50 percent greater risk of death from heart attack. A study led by researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle and published in the July 15 New England Journal of Medicine examined more than 5,600 individuals and found that those diagnosed with the condition were 50 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack within 5 years. The researchers labeled the condition an "active disease process that may be treatable or preventable" if intervention methods could be developed.
